A household name in packaging for more than 50 years

History v.d. Waal

1965

Beginning trade in legumes 1965

In 1965, Piet van der Waal started to peddle his wares from door to door. His merchandise mainly consisted of potatoes, vegetables and fruit. After a few years, he started looking for marketplaces for potatoes and legumes.

The wholesale sector soon came up with the question of whether he could supply legumes in consumer packaging. This turned out to be a "gap in the market", where the weighing of the legumes was still done manually in the beginning.

Afterwards, a machine was purchased to weigh these packages automatically, and soon after that a real packaging machine followed, taking care of the entire process from weighing to filling.

This company grew steadily, resulting in long days and little rest. In 1995, Piet suffered from a hernia and could not do his job anymore. He was eventually confined to bed and his work was done by his wife and children. A proper family business was created, in which his son Peter developed as a deputy. This soon became definite, with a considerable increase in packaging.

In 2015, we celebrated our 50th anniversary and Piet van der Waal thought this was a good opportunity to say goodbye, so Peter became 100% owner and director. The company soon turned out to be too big to be run by one person and Herman Bulk became co-owner in 2017.

In 1997, the old location became too small and the trucks couldn't reach it anymore and, as a result, a move to the industrial area of Strijen proved necessary.
When in 2004, this location also became too small, a second space was added, the floor area was expanded from 500m² to 1200m².

New housing in Strijen 1997

In 2015, the adjoining building was put up for sale and the floor area is now 1800m2.

As one of the first packaging companies in the Netherlands, we were awarded an HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) certificate in 2007, in order to be able to meet the requirements of food safety.

In 2012, we added a SKAL (organisation supervising organic production) certificate and thus meet the ever-increasing demand for Organic product packaging.

In order to be able to meet the legal requirements and the expectations of our customers even better, we replaced the HACCP certificate with an IFS (International Food Standard) Food certificate in 2013.

In addition to linear packaging machines for pillow bags and block bottom pouches, we have also purchased a cup machine and a bucket sealing machine over time.

In 2015, we bought a machine that can make Doypacks and Quatroseal bags. We received so many requests for this that, in 2018, we bought a second machine that can make Quatroseal bags.

In 2025, almost all dry food products will be packed that can be placed in a pouch, cup or bucket (see possibilities).

There are currently 8 packaging lines with an average of 16 employees.
